Our u16 hurling team hosted Good Counsel Liffey Gaels, with Good Counsel winning their 1st match in the championship group we knew that they would be a strong team and would be technically very well set up. We commenced the game playing the down the hill playing into a reasonable wind coming up from Cardy Rock it was a lovely afternoon for a game of hurling and both teams did not disappoint, regardless of win, lose or draw you can be guarenteed that our u16 hurlers will provide an entertaining game and will leave absolutely nothing on the pitch.
The game started with some tactical changes from Good Counsel , we responded and it unfortunatley nullified some of the suprises we had up our sleeves for the game.. The game started with a bit of shock for us and we conceded 4 very early goals in the 1st quarter of the game... We were very unclucky in the first quarter as the early goals did not reflect the general play.
Thankfully we had the water break to bring the lads in and have a chat to them and make some slight tweaks, we battled on and kept working the scoreboard, we were down at one stage in the 1at half by 13points but we had a strong finish to the 1st half and closed the gap to 1-5 to 4 -3 closing the gap to 9 points. The half time team talk was to keep pushing hard and doing the right things and making good decisions with the ball.
We started the second half well and similar to the second quarter in the 1st half we had most of the play, We found it hard to get the scores in the final third, but credit to the lads they worked extremely hard in the 1st quarter and narrowed the gap again to six points, with the final quarter we had a great spell of pressure and we were unfortunate not to get more out of the period of play.
The game ended 3-7 to 4-9 in favour to Good Counsel Liffey Gael loosing out by 5 points in the end, the early goals were the difference, but the performance was there and we had won 3 out of 4 quarters. So like the pervious Skerries game the luck was not with us this week, but the team continue to learn and develop. We have two must win games in the Championship in Sept, if results go our way we still have a chance to progress....
